Using FDOT Sewer Design Program

These steps must be completed prior to using the Florida DOT Sewer Design Program. This document also will help you through the steps necessary to perform a swer design using this program.

1. Perform grading plan and lay out sub-basins for your sewer system Each sewer inlet will have a sub-basin (watershed) which flows into the inlet. The area of each of these basins must be determined and the individual watersheds delineated.

2. Place inlets at most downstream point for each sub-basin. Regulations will usually specify a maximum allowable flowrate into each basin and these flowrates can be approximated using the rational equation. If the flowrate is too large you will need to further sub-divide the basins.

3. Determine C Coefficients that you are going to use for the design. Florida regulations use three C coefficients for the whole watershed and then each sub-basin has an acreage for each of the coefficients. In this manner yu may have three areal types such as road, yard, easement; each with their own C (such as 0.95, 0.60, 0.85).

4. Determine SubArea amounts for each of the 3 coefficients.

5. Make a nodal diagram of your proposed system. Put information about each watershed with each node. The information you should include is;

6. Number the nodes so that each node flows to a node with a higher node number.

Now you are ready to start the program. Once the program is started you should see an empty spreadsheet.

1. You will start by using the Design menu, New Design option. This option will take you to the first screen where you can enter design information. Enter the requested information about your design.

2. Click the rainfall button and enter information about your county and the return period you wish to design for.

3. Enter Node Information for Each Node. The program will atuomatically add one extra node and name it outlet. You must enter a ground elevation for this final node. Information about the system can either be entered using the node editor screen OR it can be entered on the main screen in the spreadsheet. Note that you must enter pipe sizes and inverts before any calculations can be done.
